Movie Review: Shutter Island
Shutter Island is a film that makes you uncomfortable. And the discomfort does not disappoint. Martin Scorsese, with his masterful cinematography, immediately transports the viewer into a twisted world where you are questioning your own sanity. What is real? What is not?
The movie follows two US marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his sidekick Chuck (Mark Ruffalo)
Shutter Island is a film that masterfully captures the concept that “our perception is our only reality”. Martin Scorsese is known for his darker films and Shutter Island is no different. Through masterful cinematography and compelling story telling, Scorsese keeps viewers on the edge of their seat until the very end.
I do admit, this film is not for everyone. It lacks the fast paced action many people seek, nor is there a romantic storyline. However, if you are a lover of mind bending movies such as “Looper”, “Momento”, and “Cloud Atlas”, this movie is definitely for you. If you are wanting a film like “Transformers” or “Mean Girls”, this is probably not for you.
With a nail biting intensity without needing the typical Hollywood action sequence, Shutter island is a psychological thriller that begs the viewer to replay the movie over and over again. I rate it 5/5
